Scratched Lenses
My glasses were a couple of years old and developed some nasty scratches. Nothing too major but just enough to cause me to turn my head a little to get a clearer view of whatever it was I was doing. My wife had worn contacts years before. I asked her how she liked them and surprisingly she recommended them to me. So, being anxious to try something new, I promptly road my motorcycle down to the eye store (It’s just shorter to say ‘Eye Store’ than to actually say the name of the store) and got an eye exam. Turns out I was a reasonable candidate for contact lenses. I have an astigmatism in each eye so the contacts have to correct for that. “No problem”.
So now I have contacts in and I am writing this blog. Everything is fine and dandy. The lines are clear and crisp. Of course that is because I’m wearing reading glasses to augment the contact lenses. My close up vision is blurry now. “Your eyes will take some time to get used to it”. Fun.. more glasses. “They will get better, just give it a week.” Not sure I can keep from rubbing these little soft discs out of my eyes before then. Then there is the occaisional blur as the contacts “rotate” in my eye. If the contact does not stay in the correct orientation, then the astigmatism correction is wrong and it really messes up my vision. “Just blink a few times, they should ‘right’ themselves”. Great.
I’ll give them a week. If after that I’ve not fallen in love with them, I’ll get new lenses for my glasses. We will see.. no pun intended.
Recent Travels - New Friends
Just returned from corporate. Spent the week on-site working with a new computer related product and met quite a few new people at the office. I always enjoy this aspect. There is much to be learned and so little time to do it. I really appreciate the warm reception I get when I go back to the office.
Sometimes people will let me snap a quick picture. This is Sachin, an employee of a company that works with my company. Very nice guy. He does the same sort of work that I do, only he does from a farther distance :).

Guess I won’t need to change those brake pads after all
I was recently in an automobile accident. The thing about auto accidents is that it’s almost always somebody’s fault. The beauty of it being someone’s fault is that you can blame them for the whole mess. That’s all fine and dandy unless there isn’t anyone else in the wreck (other drivers, that is). See my point.
Yep…it was my fault. Well, really the tires would not grip the slick road and the road was really wet. Does that count? Probably not. Well the good news is that I was not hurt (except for the soreness that followed for three days). The car - totaled
Guess I won’t have to change those brake pads!
Forgot How to Rest
Work is a blur of time running past me. IT on-call is a nightmare. No rest, anticipation of another phone call in the middle of the night. Wondering what system is going to run out of space or which application is going to go down. Thank goodness this is just for a week. All week long I keep repeating to myself “on-call is almost over, on-call is almost over”.
Finally, reprieve. The weekend is here. Now what. What to do? Go to the park with the family? Cook out? Mow the lawn? Poison some more ant beds? Replenish groceries for the house? Shop for necessities? Clean something up? Fix the broken lamp light in the front yard? Replace the brake pads on the car?……….
What is relaxation? I don’t know anymore. Can someone tell me. Really, I’m just not seeing any rest here. I wish I knew. This is something my wife and I both struggle with. We finally get some free time and we blow it on “other” work. How does one manage it all? Maybe we (mankind) are not supposed to have any down time. Maybe we are supposed to work all the time (except Sunday or course). But even then, (Sunday) is not really all that relaxing. Get up early, fix breakfast, get the kids up, get the kids dressed (because they sure won’t do it without having a drill instructor over them), go to sunday school, go to “Big Church”, come home, get lunch, crash… maybe that is relaxing. The act of “crashing” in my easy chair. You know, the act of sitting down with the intent to relax and just ponder how well you have it. Then your eyes close and suddenly your asleep. I didn’t mean to fall asleep sitting up. Then after about an hour or so, you week up. Neck is sore, because I was relaxing. Feeling more tired than before.
I just really can’t figure out how to do it. I feel like I never get my energy back.
I honestly think this may be as good as it gets. Considering that there are other people in the world who have to work all seven days just to have enough money to buy some bread, got a meager amount of groceries for their household and survive. I know we Americans have it too good. I’m not trying to sound like an unthankful dolt (but I guess I do sound that way). But it seems we have forgot how to take time to “smell the coffee” or play with our kids or just sit down with a cup of coffee and just talk with our spouses for while.
I really want to build the strength of my family. I just don’t know how to do it with the pace we run for work. I think our priorities are skewed. We worry too much about how our bosses or peers or neighbors think of us. We need to set better work boundaries. We need to focus more on our how to serve our families best.
A nice and easy sort of day…..
